Printing tips

The story behind the craft

Bible passage: Genesis 22:1–19

As Abraham prepares to offer Isaac, an angel calls for him to stop. Abraham sees a ram caught in a thicket and offers it instead, naming the place in recognition of God’s provision.

Main takeaway: The ram marks the moment Isaac is spared and provision is given.

As you arrange the scene

Discuss the characters and setting before placing the cut-out pieces on the background.

Focus on the stopping voice, the thicket and the ram. This is a difficult account for adult-led discussion, never an activity about obeying an instruction to harm someone.

Younger learners can name the people and describe their positions. Older learners can explain the moment being represented and distinguish the passage from choices made in the illustration.

Questions to explore

  • What stopped Abraham?
  • What did he find in the thicket?
  • Why must the rescue be included when telling this story?

Common questions

What files are included in this download?

The download is a 2-page PDF: GodProvidesaRamforIsaac.pdf. This is the English edition. You print the files yourself; physical supplies are not included.

What do children cut and arrange?

The two-page PDF provides the illustrated scene/background and separate cut-out pieces. Colour the pieces, cut them out and try their positions on the background before gluing the final scene. For a Bible reading to accompany this activity, use Genesis 22:1–19.

Which pages should I print, and at what size?

The original PDF pages are A4 landscape. GodProvidesaRamforIsaac.pdf: print the pages you want to use for each learner or group. Print single-sided. On US Letter paper, select Letter and Fit or shrink to the printable area; the originals are not separate Letter-sized files.

What supplies and preparation does this need?

Paper, colouring pencils, scissors and glue. An adult can prepare smaller cut-outs so children can concentrate on choosing where each piece belongs.

What help might children need with this activity?

Suggested ages: 6–10 years. Pre-cut small character pieces for children who need help. Children can colour and arrange adult-prepared pieces. Adjust this guide for the child’s reading and making skills.
