Getting ready

Age & adult help

Following several illustrated panels and reading speech or story text adds a literacy demand to the colouring.

Read panels aloud and help children follow their order. Check the story and wording before using it with younger children.

What you’ll need

Printer, paper, colouring pencils or crayons. An adult reader may be helpful for younger children.

Time & preparation

One comic page, including colouring. Shared reading and discussion are additional.
Age is an editorial estimate for the motor and reading demands of this format. Difficulty, completion time and suggested tools are planning estimates, not build-tested. An adult should adapt discussion of death, danger or distress to the group.

Check the file before you print for a group, and allow for any extra help the kids might need.

Printing tips

The story behind the craft

Bible passage: 1 Kings 21

Naboth refuses to give up his family vineyard to Ahab. Jezebel arranges false accusations and Naboth’s death so Ahab can take it; Elijah confronts the king over what has happened.

Main takeaway: Wanting something never makes theft, false witness or abuse of power right.

While you colour the panels

Read the panels in order, pausing at a change in a character’s action or understanding.

Compare Ahab’s desire with Naboth’s family responsibility. Keep the focus on injustice and accountability, with an adult choosing details of the killing.

Younger learners can describe an action in one panel. Older learners can compare a caption with its Bible passage and discuss what a short comic leaves out.

Questions to explore

  • Why did Naboth keep his vineyard?
  • How were lies used against him?
  • Why should a person’s power not decide whether another person’s rights matter?

Common questions

What files are included in this download?

The download is a 1-page PDF: NabothsVineyard_1Kings21.pdf. This is the English edition. You print the files yourself; physical supplies are not included.

Is this a comic to read or a colouring sheet?

It combines both on one page: outlined comic panels with story captions. Read the panels in sequence, then colour and talk about the illustrated moments. It is a flat printable, with no paper mechanism to assemble. Printed captions include “King Ahab wants Naboth's vineyard, but Naboth refuses to sell” and “Naboth has a beautiful vineyard next to King Ahab's palace”.

Which pages should I print, and at what size?

The original PDF pages are A4 portrait. NabothsVineyard_1Kings21.pdf: print the page for each learner or group. Print single-sided. On US Letter paper, select Letter and Fit or shrink to the printable area; the originals are not separate Letter-sized files.

What supplies and preparation does this need?

Printer paper and colouring pencils or crayons. An adult can read the captions and help children follow the order of the panels.

What help might children need with this activity?

Suggested ages: 7–12 years. Read panels aloud and help children follow their order. Check the story and wording before using it with younger children. Adjust this guide for the child’s reading and making skills.
