Printing tips

The story behind the craft

Bible passage: 2 Chronicles 22:10–23:21

Athaliah seizes power, but Joash is hidden and protected as a young child. Years later Jehoiada gathers support to make Joash king and renew the community’s covenant.

Main takeaway: People act courageously to protect a vulnerable child and preserve the royal line.

While you colour the panels

Read the panels in order, pausing at a change in a character’s action or understanding.

Follow the hidden child, the years of protection and the public covenant. Adult-select the violent events surrounding the change of rulers.

Younger learners can describe an action in one panel. Older learners can compare a caption with its Bible passage and discuss what a short comic leaves out.

Questions to explore

  • Who protected Joash?
  • Why was his hiding place important?
  • What responsibilities do adults have towards vulnerable children?
