Single lesson
Isaac Is Born: Joy and Waiting
Genesis 21:1–8
This lesson helps children notice the joy in Isaac’s birth and the repeated words that God did what he had said. Children will follow the passage from birth to celebration and carefully retell its events in order.
Before you teach
Genesis 21:1–8 says Yahweh visited Sarah and she bore Abraham a son at the set time God had spoken of. Abraham named the child Isaac, circumcised him on the eighth day, Sarah spoke about laughter, and Abraham held a great feast when Isaac was weaned.
Students will be able to retell three joyful details from Genesis 21:1–8 and identify that Isaac was born as God had said.
Welcome: Hear the repeated words
5 minAsk children to listen for repeated words about what God said and what happened. Briefly explain that this passage tells about Isaac’s birth and the joy that followed. If you mention waiting, present it as a discussion idea from the family’s old age, not as a direct statement of this passage.
Genesis 21:1, Genesis 21:2, Genesis 21:5, Genesis 21:7
Read and explain: Birth at the set time
8 minRead the passage aloud. Point out the phrases “as he had said”, “as he had spoken”, and “at the set time”. These words show that the birth happened in line with God’s speech. Then note the clear events: Sarah conceived and bore a son, Abraham named him Isaac, and Abraham was one hundred years old.
Genesis 21:1, Genesis 21:2, Genesis 21:3, Genesis 21:5
Discuss: Isaac, laughter, and old age
6 minHelp children notice Sarah’s own words. She says God has made her laugh and that others will laugh with her. She also says she has borne Abraham a son in his old age and speaks about nursing children. Keep the focus on what Sarah actually says in the passage.
Genesis 21:6, Genesis 21:7
Make and respond: What God said and what happened timeline
7 minChildren make a simple three-part timeline with labels such as “God said”, “Isaac was born”, and “Isaac was weaned”. They may add small drawings for laughter or a feast. As they work, ask them to retell what happened first, next, and later, using words from the passage where possible.
Genesis 21:1, Genesis 21:2, Genesis 21:6, Genesis 21:8
Closing: Joyful review
4 minReview the passage in order: Yahweh visited Sarah, Isaac was born, Abraham named him Isaac, Abraham circumcised him on the eighth day as God had commanded, Sarah spoke about laughter, and Abraham made a great feast when Isaac was weaned. Invite each child to share one joyful detail they remember.
Genesis 21:1, Genesis 21:3, Genesis 21:4, Genesis 21:6, Genesis 21:8

What God Said and What Happened Timeline
What you’ll need
- Plain paper or paper strips
- Pencils or crayons
- Ruler optional
- Sticky tape optional
Try it together
- Give each child a strip of paper and divide it into three parts.
- Write or copy three short labels: “God said”, “Isaac was born”, and “Isaac was weaned”.
- Children draw one small picture in each part, such as a baby, a laughing face, or a feast.
- Ask children to point along the timeline and retell the passage in order.
- If time allows, let children explain one picture they chose.
This activity helps children see the order of the passage and connect God’s speech with the events that follow, including Isaac’s birth, Sarah’s laughter, and Abraham’s feast in Genesis 21:1, Genesis 21:2, Genesis 21:6, and Genesis 21:8.
Adapt for your group
- For younger children, write the three labels for them and let them focus on drawing and retelling the order.
- For older or stronger readers, ask them to copy a short phrase from Sarah’s words and explain why it matches one part of their timeline.
An optional closing prayer
“God, thank you for the joy in this passage and for doing what you said. Please help us listen carefully to your words and be thankful. Amen.”
