Single lesson
Jeremiah Hears of a Plot against Him
Jeremiah 11:18–23
Jeremiah 11:18–23 shows Jeremiah learning about a secret plot against him, bringing his case to Yahweh, and hearing Yahweh’s judgement on the people who threatened him. Students will trace the account in order and notice what God knows and what people choose.
Before you teach
In this passage Jeremiah says Yahweh gave him knowledge of a plot against him. The plotters wanted to silence him and stop him speaking in Yahweh’s name. Jeremiah responds by addressing Yahweh, and Yahweh answers with a judgement against the men of Anathoth who were seeking Jeremiah’s life.
Students will be able to retell the sequence of Jeremiah 11:18–23 and identify that Yahweh knows hidden actions, judges righteously, and hears Jeremiah’s case.
Welcome: Hidden plans and what God sees
5 minAsk students to think about the difference between what people know and what God knows. Introduce the passage: Jeremiah did not know about the plot at first, but Yahweh showed him their actions. Explain that this lesson deals with threats and judgement, so the class will read carefully and respectfully.
Jeremiah 11:18, Jeremiah 11:19
Read and explain: Jeremiah learns of the plot
10 minRead verses 18–19 aloud slowly. Help students sequence the details: Yahweh gave Jeremiah knowledge, Jeremiah had been unaware, and the plotters wanted him cut off so his name would be remembered no more. Explain the picture of a gentle lamb as showing Jeremiah’s lack of awareness and vulnerability in this moment.
Jeremiah 11:18, Jeremiah 11:19
Discuss: Jeremiah’s response and God’s character
8 minRead verse 20 and discuss Jeremiah’s response. He speaks to Yahweh of Armies, says Yahweh judges righteously and tests heart and mind, and places his cause before God. Keep the focus on what the verse says about God’s judgement and Jeremiah’s decision to bring the matter to him.
Jeremiah 11:20
Make and respond: Sequence and choice cards
12 minStudents create six simple cards, one for each verse, with a short phrase or symbol showing the main action. Then they place the cards in order and mark choices and outcomes: the men of Anathoth threaten Jeremiah, Jeremiah reveals his cause to Yahweh, and Yahweh declares punishment. Finish by sharing one truth about God from the ordered cards.
Jeremiah 11:18, Jeremiah 11:19, Jeremiah 11:20, Jeremiah 11:21, Jeremiah 11:22, Jeremiah 11:23
Closing: The plot, the warning, and the judgement
5 minRead verses 21–23 to complete the account. Point out the direct threat: ‘You shall not prophesy in Yahweh’s name’. Then summarise Yahweh’s answer that punishment is coming on the men of Anathoth. Close by reviewing the whole sequence from hidden plot to revealed judgement.

Questions to explore
What changed between the start of the passage and Jeremiah’s understanding of the danger against him?
Look at how verse 18 says Yahweh gave Jeremiah knowledge, then compare it with verse 19 where Jeremiah says he did not know about their plans.
Jeremiah 11:18, Jeremiah 11:19
What do Jeremiah’s words in verse 20 teach about how he viewed Yahweh?
List the phrases Jeremiah uses for Yahweh in the verse and use those exact words to describe God’s character and action.
Jeremiah 11:20
What were the men of Anathoth trying to make Jeremiah stop doing, and what outcome did Yahweh announce for them?
Read the threat in verse 21, then match it with the punishment named in verses 22–23.

Jeremiah Plot Sequence Cards
What you’ll need
- Plain paper or card
- Pens or pencils
- Scissors
- Bible text of Jeremiah 11:18–23
Try it together
- Divide a sheet into six boxes and label them with the verse numbers 18 to 23.
- In each box, write a key phrase or draw a simple symbol for that verse, such as knowledge, lamb, prayer, threat, punishment, or no remnant.
- Cut the boxes into cards and mix them up.
- Put the cards back in order and explain aloud how the account moves from discovery to response to judgement.
- Circle or underline one card that shows a human choice and one card that shows God’s action.
This activity helps students follow the sequence of Jeremiah 11:18–23 and distinguish between the actions of the plotters, Jeremiah’s response, and Yahweh’s judgement.
Adapt for your group
- For younger or less confident readers, keep the cards uncut and work through the six boxes in order as a whole group, supplying one short phrase for each verse together.
- For stronger students, ask them to add a second note to each card: either ‘what people did’ or ‘what Yahweh did’, using only words drawn from the passage.
An optional closing prayer
Proposed words: Lord, help us listen carefully to your word. Thank you that you know what is hidden and judge righteously. Help us bring our concerns to you with honesty and reverence. Amen.

Jeremiah 11
18 Yahweh gave me knowledge of it, and I knew it. Then you showed me their doings.
19 But I was like a gentle lamb that is led to the slaughter. I didn’t know that they had devised plans against me, saying, “Let’s destroy the tree with its fruit, and let’s cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be no more remembered.”
20 But, Yahweh of Armies, who judges righteously, who tests the heart and the mind, I will see your vengeance on them; for to you I have revealed my cause.
21 “Therefore Yahweh says concerning the men of Anathoth, who seek your life, saying, ‘You shall not prophesy in Yahweh’s name, that you not die by our hand’—
22 therefore Yahweh of Armies says, ‘Behold, I will punish them. The young men will die by the sword. Their sons and their daughters will die by famine.
23 There will be no remnant to them, for I will bring evil on the men of Anathoth, even the year of their visitation.’ ”
