Jeremiah Hears of a Plot against Him
Jeremiah learns that men from his own town are threatening him because he speaks in the Lord’s name.
Jeremiah said that the Lord made a hidden matter known to him. Only then did he understand what these people were doing against him. What had been secret was shown to him by God.
Before that, Jeremiah had been unsuspecting, like a gentle lamb led to slaughter. He had not known that people were making plans against him. They wanted to cut him off from the land of the living so his name would be remembered no more.
Jeremiah turned to the Lord of Armies with his cause. He said that the Lord judges rightly and tests the heart and mind. Jeremiah expected God to deal justly with those who were against him.
Then the Lord spoke about the men of Anathoth. They were seeking Jeremiah’s life and warning him not to prophesy in the Lord’s name, or he would die by their hand. Their threat showed their rejection of the message God had sent.
The Lord announced punishment on the men of Anathoth. Their young men would die by the sword, and their sons and daughters by famine. No remnant would remain, because God would bring disaster on them in the time appointed for their punishment.
