Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand

Matthew 15:29–39; Mark 8:1–10

In this lesson, children will follow the order of events as Jesus cares for a large crowd. They will notice his compassion, the disciples’ question, and the outcome when everyone eats and is filled.

6–10 years30 minutes

Before you teach

Matthew says Jesus went near the Sea of Galilee, up on a mountain, and healed many people who were brought to him. The crowd glorified the God of Israel. After three days with the crowd, Jesus spoke to his disciples about their need for food in a deserted place.

Learning aim

Students will be able to retell the main steps of the feeding of the four thousand and identify that Jesus showed compassion and provided food for the crowd.

1

Welcome: What happened before the meal?

5 min

Invite children to listen for the setting and the need. Explain that Jesus was near the Sea of Galilee and many people came to him. He healed those brought to him, and the crowd glorified the God of Israel. This helps children see that the feeding comes after days with a large crowd already gathered around Jesus.

Matthew 15:29, Matthew 15:30, Matthew 15:31

2

Read and explain: Jesus notices the crowd’s need

7 min

Read the account aloud from one Gospel, then add details from the other. Point out Jesus’ own words: he had compassion because the people had been with him three days and had nothing to eat. Some had come a long way, and he did not want them to faint on the way home.

Matthew 15:32, Mark 8:1, Mark 8:2, Mark 8:3

3

Discuss: The disciples’ question and Jesus’ instruction

6 min

Help children trace the next choices in order. The disciples asked where bread could be found in a deserted place for so many people. Jesus asked how many loaves they had. They answered, seven, and also a few small fish. Then Jesus told the crowd to sit down on the ground.

Matthew 15:33, Matthew 15:34, Matthew 15:35, Mark 8:4, Mark 8:5, Mark 8:7

4

Make and respond: Sequence the account

8 min

Children make simple sequence cards showing the main events: crowd with Jesus, Jesus speaks with compassion, seven loaves and a few fish, crowd sits down, Jesus gives thanks, disciples serve, everyone eats, leftovers collected, Jesus leaves by boat. As they arrange the cards, ask them to say what happened first, next, and last.

Matthew 15:32, Matthew 15:34, Matthew 15:35, Matthew 15:36, Matthew 15:37, Matthew 15:39, Mark 8:7, Mark 8:10

5

Closing: What does this passage show?

4 min

Review the outcomes named in the passage. Everyone ate and was filled, and seven baskets of broken pieces were left over. About four thousand ate, and Matthew adds that women and children were there too. Finish by asking children to state one thing they learned about Jesus from his words or actions in this account.

Matthew 15:37, Matthew 15:38, Mark 8:8, Mark 8:9

Questions to explore

Why did Jesus say he did not want to send the crowd away without food?

Look at Jesus’ own words about compassion, three days, and the risk that people might faint on the way.

Matthew 15:32, Mark 8:2, Mark 8:3

What did the disciples say when Jesus spoke about feeding the crowd?

Find their question about getting enough bread in a deserted place for so many people.

Matthew 15:33, Mark 8:4

What happened after Jesus gave thanks and the disciples served the food?

Read the verses that tell what the whole crowd received and what was collected afterwards.

Matthew 15:36, Matthew 15:37, Mark 8:6, Mark 8:8

Feed the Crowd Sequence Cards

What you’ll need

  • plain paper or card
  • pencils or crayons
  • scissors
  • Bible

Try it together

  1. Draw or write nine simple cards for the main events of the account.
  2. Read the passage again and ask children to place the cards in the correct order.
  3. Let children retell the account by pointing to each card and naming what happened.
  4. Finish by circling the cards that show Jesus’ compassion and the crowd being filled.

This activity helps children sequence the account carefully and notice the choices and outcomes named in the passage.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger children, prepare the cards in advance with simple pictures and use fewer steps to order.
  • For older children, ask them to compare Matthew and Mark by listing details each account includes, using the verses read.

An optional closing prayer

You might pray: “Lord Jesus, thank you for your compassion for people in need. Please help us listen carefully to your words and remember what you did.”

Matthew 15

29 Jesus departed from there and came near to the sea of Galilee; and he went up on the mountain and sat there.

30 Great multitudes came to him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others, and they put them down at his feet. He healed them,

31 so that the multitude wondered when they saw the mute speaking, the injured healed, the lame walking, and the blind seeing—and they glorified the God of Israel.

32 Jesus summoned his disciples and said, “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have continued with me now three days and have nothing to eat. I don’t want to send them away fasting, or they might faint on the way.”

33 The disciples said to him, “Where could we get so many loaves in a deserted place as to satisfy so great a multitude?”

34 Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven, and a few small fish.”

35 He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground;

36 and he took the seven loaves and the fish. He gave thanks and broke them, and gave to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.

37 They all ate and were filled. They took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces that were left over.

38 Those who ate were four thousand men, in addition to women and children.

39 Then he sent away the multitudes, got into the boat, and came into the borders of Magdala.

Mark 8

1 In those days, when there was a very great multitude, and they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to himself and said to them,

2 “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have stayed with me now three days and have nothing to eat.

3 If I send them away fasting to their home, they will faint on the way, for some of them have come a long way.”

4 His disciples answered him, “From where could one satisfy these people with bread here in a deserted place?”

5 He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven.”

6 He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground, and he took the seven loaves. Having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to serve, and they served the multitude.

7 They also had a few small fish. Having blessed them, he said to serve these also.

8 They ate and were filled. They took up seven baskets of broken pieces that were left over.

9 Those who had eaten were about four thousand. Then he sent them away.

10 Immediately he entered into the boat with his disciples and came into the region of Dalmanutha.
