Peter and John: Healing and Speaking Boldly
Acts 3:1–10; Acts 4:1–31
Peter and John meet a man who cannot walk, and God heals him in the name of Jesus. After that, Peter and John are questioned and threatened, yet they keep speaking about Jesus and pray for boldness.
Before you teach
In these verses, Peter and John are going to the temple at the hour of prayer when they meet a man who is carried there every day to ask for gifts. After he is healed, many people see it. Then priests, the captain of the temple, and Sadducees challenge Peter and John because they are teaching about Jesus and the resurrection.
Students will be able to put the account in order and explain that Peter and John spoke about Jesus boldly, even when they were threatened.
Welcome: What happened first?
4 minBriefly introduce two linked parts of the account: a healing at the temple gate and a bold answer before rulers. Tell children they will listen for the order of events and for choices people make. Ask them to notice what Peter says he does and does not have, and what happens next.
Acts 3:1, Acts 3:6, Acts 4:7
Read and explain: The man is healed
8 minRead Acts 3:1–10 aloud. Explain that the man had been lame from birth and was placed daily at the temple door to ask for gifts. Peter says he has no silver or gold, but gives what he has: healing in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. The man stands, walks, leaps, and praises God. The people recognise him and are amazed.
Acts 3:2, Acts 3:6, Acts 3:7, Acts 3:8, Acts 3:10
Discuss: Questioned and answered boldly
7 minRead selected verses from Acts 4:1–22. Explain that the leaders are upset because Peter and John teach the people and proclaim in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. They ask by what power or name this happened. Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, says the man stands whole in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Even after threats, Peter and John say they cannot stop telling what they saw and heard.
Acts 4:2, Acts 4:7, Acts 4:8, Acts 4:10, Acts 4:18, Acts 4:20
Make and respond: Story sequence cards
7 minGive children simple cards to draw or label with key moments from the account. Include the gate, Peter speaking, the man walking, the rulers questioning, the warning, and the believers praying. Children place the cards in order and retell the account in pairs, using words from the passage such as amazed, healed, name of Jesus, threatened, and boldness.
Acts 3:3, Acts 3:8, Acts 4:7, Acts 4:18, Acts 4:29, Acts 4:31
Closing: Prayer for boldness
4 minRead Acts 4:23–31. Point out that after being threatened, the believers pray together to God. They ask for boldness to speak God’s word, and after praying they speak the word of God with boldness. Finish by asking children to name one true thing they learned about God or people from these verses.
Acts 4:24, Acts 4:29, Acts 4:31
Questions to explore
What did Peter say he could give the man, and what happened after he said it?
Look closely at Peter’s words and then the next verses. The answer comes from what he says about silver and gold, and from the man standing, walking, and praising God.
Acts 3:6, Acts 3:7, Acts 3:8
Why were the priests, captain of the temple, and Sadducees upset with Peter and John?
The passage gives a clear reason. Look for what Peter and John were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus.
Acts 4:1, Acts 4:2
When Peter and John were commanded not to speak or teach in Jesus’ name, how did they answer?
Read their reply carefully. Their answer explains whose voice they must listen to and why they keep speaking.
Acts 4:18, Acts 4:19, Acts 4:20

Healing and Boldness Sequence Cards
What you’ll need
- plain paper or card
- pencils or textas
- scissors
- Bible
Try it together
- Help children choose six moments from the account: the man asking, Peter speaking, the man walking, the rulers asking, the warning, and the prayer for boldness.
- Children draw one moment on each card and add a short word or phrase from the passage.
- Mix the cards, then work alone or in pairs to place them in order from Acts 3 to Acts 4.
- Invite each child or pair to retell the account in order using their cards and at least two exact phrases from the reading.
This activity helps children sequence the account and see how the healing, the questioning, and the prayer for boldness fit together in Acts 3:1–10 and Acts 4:1–31.
Adapt for your group
- For younger children, prepare six pre-named moments and let them draw only the pictures, then place the cards in order together as a class.
- For older or more confident children, ask them to add a short caption with the matching verse reference on each card and explain one choice and one outcome from the account.
An optional closing prayer
You may pray: “Lord God, thank you for healing this man and for helping Peter and John speak boldly. Please help us learn your word and speak truthfully about Jesus.”

Acts 3
1 Peter and John were going up into the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.
2 A certain man who was lame from his mother’s womb was being carried, whom they laid daily at the door of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask gifts for the needy of those who entered into the temple.
3 Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive gifts for the needy.
4 Peter, fastening his eyes on him, with John, said, “Look at us.”
5 He listened to them, expecting to receive something from them.
6 But Peter said, “I have no silver or gold, but what I have, that I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, get up and walk!”
7 He took him by the right hand and raised him up. Immediately his feet and his ankle bones received strength.
8 Leaping up, he stood and began to walk. He entered with them into the temple, walking, leaping, and praising God.
9 All the people saw him walking and praising God.
10 They recognized him, that it was he who used to sit begging for gifts for the needy at the Beautiful Gate of the temple. They were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.
Acts 4
1 As they spoke to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came to them,
2 being upset because they taught the people and proclaimed in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
3 They laid hands on them, and put them in custody until the next day, for it was now evening.
4 But many of those who heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to be about five thousand.
5 In the morning, their rulers, elders, and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem.
6 Annas the high priest was there, with Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and as many as were relatives of the high priest.
7 When they had stood Peter and John in the middle of them, they inquired, “By what power, or in what name, have you done this?”
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “You rulers of the people and elders of Israel,
9 if we are examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed,
10 may it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, this man stands here before you whole in him.
11 He is ‘the stone which was regarded as worthless by you, the builders, which has become the head of the corner.’
12 There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved!”
13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and had perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marveled. They recognized that they had been with Jesus.
14 Seeing the man who was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.
15 But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,
16 saying, “What shall we do to these men? Because indeed a notable miracle has been done through them, as can be plainly seen by all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we can’t deny it.
17 But so that this spreads no further among the people, let’s threaten them, that from now on they don’t speak to anyone in this name.”
18 They called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.
19 But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, judge for yourselves,
20 for we can’t help telling the things which we saw and heard.”
21 When they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people; for everyone glorified God for that which was done.
22 For the man on whom this miracle of healing was performed was more than forty years old.
23 Being let go, they came to their own company and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them.
24 When they heard it, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord and said, “O Lord, you are God, who made the sky, the earth, the sea, and all that is in them;
25 who by the mouth of your servant David, said, ‘Why do the nations rage, and the peoples plot a vain thing?
26 The kings of the earth take a stand, and the rulers plot together, against the Lord, and against his Christ.’
27 “For truly, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed,
28 to do whatever your hand and your counsel foreordained to happen.
29 Now, Lord, look at their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your word with all boldness,
30 while you stretch out your hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of your holy Servant Jesus.”
31 When they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were gathered together. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.
