Single lesson
The Boy Jesus in the Temple
Luke 2:41–52
This lesson helps children follow the events of Jesus at age twelve, notice his words about his Father, and see how the passage ends with his return to Nazareth and his growth.
Before you teach
Jesus’ parents went every year to Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover. When Jesus was twelve, they went according to the custom of the feast. On the way home, his parents realised he was not with them, returned to Jerusalem, and later found him in the temple listening to the teachers and asking them questions.
Students will be able to retell the sequence of Luke 2:41–52 and explain that Jesus spoke about his Father’s house, then returned to Nazareth and was subject to his parents.
Welcome: Start with the yearly journey
5 minExplain that the account begins with a repeated family journey. Jesus’ parents went every year to Jerusalem for the Passover, and when Jesus was twelve, he went with them according to the custom of the feast. Ask children to listen for where they go, what happens on the return trip, and what Jesus says when he is found.
Luke 2:41, Luke 2:42
Read and explain: Missing on the way home
8 minRead the passage aloud. Help children follow the order carefully. After the feast, the family began returning, but Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem and Joseph and his mother did not know it. They supposed he was in the company, travelled a day, searched among relatives and acquaintances, then returned to Jerusalem looking for him.
Luke 2:43, Luke 2:44, Luke 2:45
Discuss: Found in the temple
6 minShow what they saw after three days. They found Jesus in the temple, sitting in the middle of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. This helps children notice both his actions and the response of the people around him.
Luke 2:46, Luke 2:47
Make and respond: Sequence the account
7 minGive children paper to make five sequence cards: journey to Jerusalem, day’s journey home, search among relatives, return to Jerusalem, and finding Jesus in the temple before going back to Nazareth. As they arrange the cards, ask them to match each one to a verse and say what choice or action is described there.
Luke 2:42, Luke 2:44, Luke 2:45, Luke 2:46, Luke 2:51
Closing: Jesus’ words and the ending
4 minFinish by reading Mary’s words and Jesus’ reply. Mary says they were anxiously looking for him. Jesus says he must be in his Father’s house. Verse 50 says they did not understand this saying. Then Jesus went to Nazareth, was subject to them, and increased in wisdom, stature, and favour with God and men.
Luke 2:48, Luke 2:49, Luke 2:50, Luke 2:51, Luke 2:52
Questions to explore
Why did Mary and Joseph not notice straight away that Jesus was missing?

Luke 2:44
What was Jesus doing when his parents found him in the temple?
Use the exact actions in the verse: he was sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.
Luke 2:46
What happened after Jesus spoke about his Father’s house?
Read the next verses to see both parts of the ending: his parents did not understand this saying, and Jesus returned to Nazareth and was subject to them.
Luke 2:50, Luke 2:51

Story Sequence Cards
What you’ll need
- Plain paper or card
- Pencils or crayons
- Scissors
- Bible
Try it together
- Draw or write five scenes from the passage on separate cards: journey to Jerusalem, journey home, searching, finding Jesus in the temple, return to Nazareth.
- Mix the cards and ask children to place them in order using the Bible verses.
- Invite children to add the matching verse reference to each card.
- Let pairs retell the account in order by pointing to the cards and naming the main action in each scene.
This activity helps children sequence the account and connect each part to the words of Luke 2:41–52.
Adapt for your group
- For younger children, prepare the five scene labels for them and let them focus on ordering pictures and repeating key phrases from the verses.
- For older or confident children, ask them to include verse numbers on each card and explain the difference between what Mary said in Luke 2:48 and what Jesus said in Luke 2:49.
An optional closing prayer
You may pray: "Father, thank you for what this passage says about Jesus, his words about his Father, and his return to Nazareth. Please help us listen carefully to your word and grow in wisdom and obedient hearts."

Luke 2
41 His parents went every year to Jerusalem at the feast of the Passover.
42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast;
43 and when they had fulfilled the days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. Joseph and his mother didn’t know it,
44 but supposing him to be in the company, they went a day’s journey; and they looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances.
45 When they didn’t find him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for him.
46 After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the middle of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions.
47 All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.
48 When they saw him, they were astonished; and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us this way? Behold, your father and I were anxiously looking for you.”
49 He said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?”
50 They didn’t understand the saying which he spoke to them.
51 And he went down with them and came to Nazareth. He was subject to them, and his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
