The Seed That Grows
Mark 4:26–29
Jesus tells a short parable about seed growing in the ground. Children will hear what Jesus says God’s Kingdom is like, notice how the seed grows, and explain the main teaching from the parable itself.
Before you teach
In these verses, Jesus begins with the words, “God’s Kingdom is as if”, then gives a farming picture. The parable moves from seed being cast on the earth, to growth the man does not understand, to stages of fruit, and finally to harvest.
Students will be able to identify that Jesus is describing what God’s Kingdom is like and explain that, in this parable, it grows step by step until harvest even though the man does not know how.
Welcome: What is Jesus explaining?
5 minShow a seed, grain, or quick sketch of a plant. Ask children what sort of thing might grow from a seed. Then tell them the key situation in the passage: Jesus is explaining what “God’s Kingdom is as if”. Invite them to listen for the picture Jesus uses to explain that.
Mark 4:26
Read and explain: Seed on the earth
7 minRead all four verses aloud. Point out that the man casts seed on the earth. After that, he sleeps and rises night and day. Meanwhile, the seed springs up and grows. The passage says plainly that the man does not know how this happens, even though the growth is real.
Mark 4:26, Mark 4:27
Discuss: What the parable says
6 minSlow down and trace the order Jesus gives. The earth bears fruit “by itself”, then the stages follow: first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. Ask, “If Jesus says, ‘God’s Kingdom is as if’, what does this picture show about the Kingdom?” Keep answers tied to the growth pattern in the verses.
Mark 4:26, Mark 4:28
Make and respond: Growth timeline
8 minChildren create a five-part strip showing seed, blade, ear, full grain, and harvest. While they work, separate observation from application. Observation: the text says the man does not know how, the earth bears fruit, and harvest comes when fruit is ripe. Application: we may consider patient waiting as one response to this picture.
Mark 4:27, Mark 4:28, Mark 4:29
Closing: The harvest has come
4 minRead verse 29 again and ask children to finish this sentence: “Jesus says God’s Kingdom is as if...” Help them answer from the text, not from guesses. End by noting that the parable moves towards harvest when the fruit is ripe. That is what the passage directly says; our personal responses come after that.

Questions to explore
What is Jesus talking about when he begins, “God’s Kingdom is as if”?
Start with verse 26. The parable is not mainly explaining farming. Jesus is using farming to describe what God’s Kingdom is like.
Mark 4:26
What does the man do, and what does he not know?
Verses 26 and 27 say that he casts seed, sleeps, and rises, but he does not know how the seed springs up and grows.
Mark 4:26, Mark 4:27
What stages of growth and ending does Jesus name?
Verse 28 gives the order, and verse 29 gives the ending: first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear, and then harvest when the fruit is ripe.

Kingdom Growth Picture Strip
What you’ll need
- Paper
- Pencils or markers
- Scissors
- Glue
- Seeds or grains if available
Try it together
- Fold or divide a sheet into five spaces.
- Draw the five parts named in the parable: seed on the earth, blade, ear, full grain in the ear, and harvest.
- Label each picture with words from the verses if the children are able.
- Put the stages in order and retell the parable using the strip.
- Circle or point to the parts the man does and the parts that happen without him knowing how.
The strip follows the exact order of the parable and helps children identify both the situation, God’s Kingdom, and the main teaching about steady growth until harvest.
Adapt for your group
- For younger children, prepare five boxes in advance and let them draw one stage in each box as you reread the matching verse.
- For older children, ask them to sort statements into “the passage says this” and “this is a possible response”, using phrases from verses 27 to 29.
An optional closing prayer
You might pray: “Lord God, thank you for Jesus’ teaching. Please help us listen carefully to what he says about your Kingdom and understand this parable truthfully.”

Mark 4
26 He said, “God’s Kingdom is as if a man should cast seed on the earth,
27 and should sleep and rise night and day, and the seed should spring up and grow, though he doesn’t know how.
28 For the earth bears fruit by itself: first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.
29 But when the fruit is ripe, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”
