The Seed That Grows
Jesus told a short parable about seed growing in a way the sower cannot fully explain.
Jesus said God’s Kingdom is like a man who scatters seed on the ground. After the seed is sown, the parable turns our attention to what happens in the earth.
The man sleeps and rises, night and day. While his days go on, the seed sprouts and grows. He can tell that growth is happening, but he does not know how it happens.
Jesus describes the order of that growth. The earth produces by itself. First comes the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. It does not all appear at once.
At last the crop is ready. When the fruit is ripe, the man puts in the sickle straight away, because the harvest has come. The parable ends with a proper time for gathering.
In this parable, Jesus teaches that God’s Kingdom grows, even when its growth is hidden from human understanding. It comes step by step, and it moves towards harvest. What patient kind of growth do you notice in Jesus’ picture here?
