Andrew, Peter, Philip and Nathanael Meet Jesus

John tells how Andrew, Simon Peter, Philip, and Nathanael first came to Jesus and began to recognise who he was.

John 1:35–51About 3 minutes
Let’s begin

John the Baptist was standing with two of his disciples when he saw Jesus walking by. John pointed to Jesus as the Lamb of God. The two disciples heard him and followed Jesus. Jesus turned and asked what they were looking for. They called him Teacher and asked where he was staying. Jesus invited them to come and see, so they went with him and stayed that day.

What happened next

One of those two disciples was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. Andrew first went to find his own brother Simon. He told Simon they had found the Messiah, which means the Christ. Then Andrew brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said that Simon son of Jonah would be called Cephas, which means Peter.

What happened next

On the next day, Jesus set out for Galilee and found Philip. Jesus said to him, 'Follow me.' Philip was from Bethsaida, the same town as Andrew and Peter.

What happened next

Philip then found Nathanael. He said they had found the one Moses wrote about in the law, and the prophets also wrote about: Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. Nathanael wondered whether anything good could come from Nazareth. Philip answered with simple words: 'Come and see.'

The end

When Jesus saw Nathanael coming, he spoke of him as a true Israelite with no deceit in him. Nathanael asked how Jesus knew him. Jesus said he had seen Nathanael under the fig tree before Philip called him. Then Nathanael said Jesus was the Son of God and the King of Israel. Jesus replied that Nathanael would see greater things, even heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.

A children’s retelling of John 1:35–51. You can read the Bible passage together too.

This retelling stays with John's account of these first meetings and does not merge it with the separate shore-and-fishing calling scenes found in other Gospels.
