Elijah and the Widow's Flour and Oil
God sent Elijah to a widow in Zarephath, where a tiny supply of flour and oil lasted through many days.
The word of the Lord came to Elijah and sent him to Zarephath, which belonged to Sidon. God said a widow there would provide for him. So Elijah got up and went. At the city gate he saw a widow gathering sticks, just as he had been told.
Elijah asked the woman for a little water to drink. As she went to get it, he also asked for a morsel of bread. The widow explained that she had no bread ready. She only had a handful of meal in a jar and a little oil in a jar.
She said she was gathering sticks so she could prepare one last small meal for herself and her son. They would eat it and then expect to die. Elijah told her not to be afraid. He told her to do as she had said, but first to make a little cake for him, and then to make some for herself and her son.
Elijah gave her the Lord's message: the meal in the jar would not run out, and the oil in the jar would not fail until the day the Lord sent rain on the earth. The widow went and did what Elijah had said.
Then the Lord kept his word. The woman, Elijah, and her household had food for many days. The jar of meal did not run out, and the jar of oil did not fail, just as the Lord had spoken through Elijah. When supplies seem small, where do you see God's care in this story?
