Herod's Pride and Death
Herod accepted praise that belonged to God, but God's word kept spreading.
Herod was very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon. They came together to ask for peace. After making friends with Blastus, the king's personal aide, they appealed to Herod because their country depended on his country for food.
On an appointed day, Herod dressed in royal clothing, sat on the throne, and gave a speech to them. The people were listening as the king addressed them.
Then the crowd shouted that this was the voice of a god and not of a man. Herod did not give God the glory when the people praised him this way.
Immediately an angel of the Lord struck Herod. The passage says this happened because he did not give God the glory. He was eaten by worms and died.
But Herod's death did not stop God's work. The word of God grew and multiplied. When Barnabas and Saul had finished their service, they returned to Jerusalem and took John, who was also called Mark, with them.
