Jairus' Daughter and the Woman Who Touches Jesus

On one urgent journey, Jesus stopped for a suffering woman and then went on to a grieving family.

Matthew 9:18–26; Mark 5:21–43; Luke 8:40–56About 3 minutes
Let’s begin

A synagogue ruler named Jairus came to Jesus and fell at his feet, begging for help for his little daughter. Matthew tells the request in a brief way, while Mark and Luke explain that the girl was dying as Jesus set out. Jesus went with Jairus, and a large crowd pressed around them.

What happened next

In that crowd was a woman who had suffered bleeding for twelve years. Mark and Luke say she had spent all she had on physicians and had not grown better. She came up behind Jesus and touched the edge of his clothing, believing that if she could touch it, she would be made well. At once, she was healed.

What happened next

Jesus stopped and asked who had touched him. The disciples were surprised because people were pressing in from every side, but Jesus knew that power had gone out from him. The woman came trembling, fell before him, and told the truth in front of everyone. Jesus spoke kindly to her, said that her faith had made her well, and sent her in peace.

What happened next

While Jesus was still speaking, news came from Jairus's house that the girl had died. Jesus told Jairus not to be afraid, but to believe. At the house he found loud weeping and disorder. He said the child was asleep, and some people laughed at him. Jesus sent the crowd outside and went in with Peter, James, John, and the girl's father and mother.

The end

Jesus took the girl by the hand and told her to get up. Immediately she rose, and Mark says she began to walk. Luke says her spirit returned, and Jesus told them to give her something to eat. Her parents were amazed, and Matthew says the report spread through that region. What do you notice about the way Jesus cared for both the woman and the child?

A children’s retelling of Matthew 9:18–26; Mark 5:21–43; Luke 8:40–56. You can read the Bible passage together too.

Matthew gives Jairus's plea in a shorter form, saying the girl had already died when he came. Mark and Luke describe her as dying at first, with news of her death arriving later. Matthew also says the report spread through the region, while Mark and Luke record Jesus ordering those present not to tell what had happened.
