Jesus Calms the Storm

As Jesus and his disciples travel by boat, a fierce storm becomes calm when he rebukes the wind and water.

Matthew 8:23–27; Mark 4:35–41; Luke 8:22–25About 2 minutes
Let’s begin

Jesus got into a boat, and his disciples went with him. They set out across the water toward the other side. Mark says it was evening and that other small boats were there too. During the journey, Jesus fell asleep in the boat.

What happened next

Then a violent windstorm rose. Waves swept over the boat, and water rushed in until the situation became dangerous. The disciples were in real fear as the storm beat against them, while Jesus was still asleep.

What happened next

The disciples woke him urgently. They cried out that they were dying and asked him to save them. Mark's account says they also asked whether he cared that they were perishing. Their fear poured out in the middle of the storm.

What happened next

Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and the water, and the storm stopped. The wind ceased, the raging water became still, and there was a great calm. He also challenged his disciples about their fear and faith.

The end

The disciples were amazed and afraid. They said to one another, asking who Jesus really was, because even the wind and the sea obeyed him. This sign left them wondering at his authority over creation.

A children’s retelling of Matthew 8:23–27; Mark 4:35–41; Luke 8:22–25. You can read the Bible passage together too.

Matthew is the lead account here. Mark adds that it was evening, that other small boats were present, and that Jesus was asleep on a cushion in the stern. Luke calls it a lake. Matthew places Jesus' question about fear before the calm, while Mark and Luke place it after.
