Jesus Frees a Man in the Synagogue
In Capernaum, Jesus teaches with authority in the synagogue and commands an unclean spirit to leave a man.
Jesus went to Capernaum, a city in Galilee. On the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught. The people were amazed at his teaching. He taught with authority, not like the scribes.
In the synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit. He cried out loudly. The spirit recognised Jesus and called him Jesus of Nazareth, the Holy One of God. It asked whether Jesus had come to destroy them.
Jesus rebuked the spirit and told it to be silent and come out of the man. The spirit cried out, shook him, and threw him down in the middle of them. Then it came out of him and did him no harm.
Everyone was amazed and began talking with one another. They had heard Jesus teach with authority, and now they had seen that unclean spirits obeyed his command. They wondered about this powerful word from Jesus.
News about Jesus spread quickly through the surrounding region. People across Galilee heard what had happened in the synagogue at Capernaum. What does this story show about Jesus and his authority?
