Jesus Heals a Woman Who Cannot Stand Straight
While teaching in a synagogue on the Sabbath, Jesus frees a woman who has been bent over for eighteen years.
On a Sabbath day, Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues. There was a woman there who had been bent over for eighteen years, and she could not straighten herself at all. When Jesus saw her, he called her over.
Jesus told her that she was freed from her infirmity. Then he laid his hands on her. At once she stood up straight, and she began glorifying God.
The ruler of the synagogue was indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath. He said to the people that there were six days for work, and that they should come on those days to be healed, not on the Sabbath.
Jesus answered that people untie an ox or a donkey on the Sabbath and lead it away to water. So it was right for this woman to be freed from her bondage on the Sabbath as well.
Jesus called her a daughter of Abraham and said that Satan had kept her bound for those long eighteen years. When he said these things, his adversaries were disappointed, and the crowd rejoiced at the glorious things he was doing.
