Jesus Heals Peter's Mother-in-Law
Jesus healed Peter's mother-in-law in a house, and by evening many more people came to him for help.
After leaving the synagogue, Jesus went to the house. Matthew calls it Peter’s house. Mark and Luke call it Simon’s house, and Mark adds that Andrew, James, and John were with them. Inside, Peter’s mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever, and the people there asked Jesus to help her.
Jesus went to her. He touched her hand, took her by the hand, and raised her up. Luke says he rebuked the fever. At once the fever left her. She got up immediately and served them.
When evening came, as the sun was setting, people brought many sick people to Jesus. They also brought people troubled by demons. Mark says the whole city was gathered at the door. The quiet house visit had become a place where a crowd came, hoping for help.
Jesus healed the sick, including people with many different diseases. Luke says he laid his hands on every one of them. He also drove out demons. Matthew says he cast out the spirits with a word. The demons knew who he was, but Jesus did not allow them to speak.
Matthew says this fulfilled what Isaiah the prophet had spoken, that he took our infirmities and bore our diseases. In this home, and at its door, Jesus showed both his authority and his care. How do you notice his compassion in the way he helped one woman and then a crowd?
