Jesus Is Transfigured
On a high mountain, Peter, James, and John saw Jesus in glory and heard the Father's voice.
Jesus had said that some standing with him would see God’s kingdom come with power. After six days, he took Peter, James, and John up a high mountain by themselves. Luke says he went there to pray.
There, Jesus was changed before them. His face shone, and his clothes became dazzling white. Moses and Elijah appeared and were talking with him. Luke says they spoke about his coming departure in Jerusalem.
Peter said it was good for them to be there and offered to make three tents, one for Jesus, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. Mark says he did not know what to say because they were very afraid, and Luke says he did not realise what he was saying.
While Peter was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them. They were afraid. Then a voice came from the cloud, saying that Jesus is the beloved Son and that they must listen to him. The disciples fell down in fear, but Jesus touched them and told them not to be afraid.
When they looked up, Moses and Elijah were gone. Jesus was alone. As they came down the mountain, Jesus told them not to tell anyone what they had seen until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. They wondered what that meant.
Then the disciples asked why the scribes said Elijah must come first. Jesus said Elijah does come first, but Elijah had already come and was not recognised. He said the Son of Man would also suffer. Then the disciples understood he was speaking about John the Baptiser.
