Jesus Washes His Disciples' Feet

During supper, Jesus washed his disciples' feet and showed them how to serve one another humbly.

John 13:1–17About 3 minutes
Let’s begin

Before the Passover festival, Jesus knew the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. He had loved his own who were in the world, and he loved them to the end. During supper, Jesus also knew that Judas Iscariot was already planning to betray him.

What happened next

Jesus knew that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God. So he rose from the supper, laid aside his outer clothing, wrapped a towel around himself, poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet and wipe them with the towel.

What happened next

When Jesus came to Simon Peter, Peter asked why Jesus was washing his feet. Jesus told him that Peter did not understand it yet, but would understand later. Peter said Jesus would never wash his feet. Jesus answered that unless he washed Peter, Peter could have no share with him.

What happened next

Then Peter asked for more than his feet to be washed. Jesus replied that someone who has bathed only needs their feet washed and is clean, though not all of them were clean. Jesus said this because he knew who would betray him.

The end

After washing their feet, Jesus put his outer clothing back on and sat down again. He told them that they rightly called him Teacher and Lord. Since he had washed their feet, they also ought to wash one another's feet. He had given them an example to follow. A servant is not greater than his master, and those who know these things are blessed if they do them. How could you show this kind of humble care today?
