Paul Arrives and Teaches in Rome

Paul finally reached Rome, met local Jewish leaders, and kept teaching about Jesus with boldness.

Acts 28:11–28; Acts 28:30–31About 3 minutes
Let’s begin

After three months on the island, Paul and his companions sailed on an Alexandrian ship that had spent the winter there. They stopped at Syracuse for three days, then came to Rhegium. After a south wind began to blow, they reached Puteoli on the second day. There they found fellow believers, stayed seven days, and then went on towards Rome.

What happened next

Believers heard Paul was coming and travelled to meet him at the Market of Appius and the Three Taverns. Seeing them, Paul thanked God and took courage. When they entered Rome, the other prisoners were handed over, but Paul was allowed to stay by himself with a soldier guarding him.

What happened next

After three days, Paul called together the Jewish leaders in Rome. He told them he had done nothing against his people or their customs, yet he had been handed over as a prisoner from Jerusalem to the Romans. He said the Romans wanted to release him, but when some Jews spoke against it, he appealed to Caesar. He explained that he was wearing a chain because of the hope of Israel.

What happened next

They replied that they had received no letters from Judea against him and had heard no bad report from visitors. Still, they wanted to hear his views, because this sect was spoken against everywhere. So they set a day, and many came to his lodging. From morning until evening, Paul explained the kingdom of God and tried to persuade them about Jesus from the Law of Moses and the Prophets.

The end

People responded in different ways. Some believed what Paul said, and some did not. As they were leaving, Paul spoke about Isaiah's words concerning people who hear without understanding and see without perceiving. Then he said that God's salvation had been sent to the nations, and they would listen. For two whole years, Paul lived in his rented house, welcomed all who came, and boldly taught about the Lord Jesus Christ without hindrance.
