Adam and Eve

A garden full of wonders. A choice. And God’s loving care.

Genesis 2–3About 3 minutes
Let’s begin

Close your eyes for a moment. Imagine a garden full of wonderful things. Tall trees stretch towards the sky. A river sparkles in the sunshine. Birds sing in the branches, and colourful flowers grow beside the path. This is the garden of Eden, and God has made it a beautiful home.

What happened next

God made a man called Adam and placed him in the garden to look after it. There were so many things to discover! God brought the animals to Adam, and Adam gave them names. But none of the animals was a companion like him. So God made a woman, Eve. Now Adam and Eve could share this wonderful home together.

What happened next

God gave Adam and Eve plenty of good food to enjoy. But there was one important rule. They must not eat the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God warned that eating it would bring death. They had a choice: would they trust God and listen to him?

What happened next

One day, a serpent spoke to Eve. He questioned what God had said and told her that she would not die. Eve looked at the fruit. She wanted it. She took some and ate it. Then she gave some to Adam, who was with her, and he ate it too. They had chosen not to listen to God.

What happened next

Suddenly, Adam and Eve felt ashamed. They made coverings from leaves. When they heard God in the garden, they hid among the trees. But God called to Adam. Adam said he was afraid. God asked what had happened. Adam blamed Eve, and Eve said the serpent had tricked her.

What happened next

God explained that their choice had consequences. Life would be harder now, and they would have to leave the garden. But God still cared for Adam and Eve. He made clothes for them before they left. Outside the garden, a different life was beginning.

The end

And that is the story of Adam, Eve and the beautiful garden. It reminds us that our choices matter. We can listen to God, tell the truth when we do something wrong, and remember that God cares for us. What would you have liked to see in the garden?
