Samson Escapes from Gaza
In Gaza, men of the city wait to kill Samson, but in the night he tears up the city gate and carries it away.
Samson went to Gaza. While he was there, he went in to a prostitute. The passage does not praise this choice. It simply reports what Samson did in that city.
The Gazites were told that Samson was there. They surrounded him and waited in secret through the night at the city gate. They kept quiet because they planned to kill him when daylight came.
Samson did not stay there until morning. He lay down only until midnight. Then he got up, went to the city gate, grabbed its doors, the two posts, and the bar, and pulled them up together.
He put the whole gate structure on his shoulders and carried it away to the top of the mountain that is before Hebron. The men of Gaza had planned to stop him, but Samson left the city during the night.
