The Widow Gives Two Small Coins

Jesus notices a poor widow at the temple and teaches his disciples what her small gift means.

Mark 12:41–44; Luke 21:1–4About 2 minutes
Let’s begin

At the temple, Jesus sat down opposite the treasury and watched people putting their gifts in. Many rich people were giving large amounts. Jesus was paying attention to the way people were giving.

What happened next

Then a poor widow came and put in two small brass coins. Her gift was tiny compared with the larger offerings, but Jesus saw her.

What happened next

Jesus called his disciples to him and taught them from what they had just seen. He said this poor widow had put in more than all the others who were giving into the treasury.

What happened next

He explained that the others had given out of their abundance. The widow, however, gave out of her poverty.

The end

Jesus said she had put in all she had to live on. He helped his disciples see that her small gift was great because it cost her so much. What do you notice about the way Jesus looked at this widow’s gift?

A children’s retelling of Mark 12:41–44; Luke 21:1–4. You can read the Bible passage together too.

Mark is the lead account. Luke reports the same temple encounter with closely matching details.
