Jesus Walks with Two Disciples to Emmaus

Two disciples travelling to Emmaus meet the risen Jesus, though they do not recognise him until he breaks bread with them.

Mark 16:12–13; Luke 24:13–35About 3 minutes
Let’s begin

On that same day, two disciples were walking from Jerusalem to a village called Emmaus. As they went, they talked together about the things that had happened. Jesus himself came near and began walking with them, but they were kept from recognising him.

What happened next

Jesus asked what they were discussing as they walked in sadness. One of them, Cleopas, answered with surprise and told him about Jesus of Nazareth, a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people. He said that the chief priests and their rulers had handed Jesus over to be condemned to death and crucified.

What happened next

The two travellers said they had hoped Jesus was the one to redeem Israel, and now it was the third day since these things happened. They also spoke of women from their group who had gone early to the tomb and not found his body. The women reported a vision of angels saying he was alive, and some others found the tomb just as the women had said, but did not see Jesus.

What happened next

Jesus rebuked them for being slow to believe what the prophets had spoken. He said that the Christ had to suffer these things and then enter his glory. Beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained from the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

What happened next

When they came near the village, Jesus acted as if he would go on. They urged him to stay because it was almost evening, so he went in with them. At the table he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognised him. He vanished from their sight.

The end

They said to each other that their hearts had burned within them while he spoke on the road and opened the Scriptures. That very hour they returned to Jerusalem and found the eleven and others gathered together, saying that the Lord had risen indeed and had appeared to Simon. Then the two travellers told what had happened on the road and how they recognised Jesus in the breaking of the bread.

A children’s retelling of Mark 16:12–13; Luke 24:13–35. You can read the Bible passage together too.

Luke 24:13-35 gives the full account. Mark 16:12-13 briefly reports that Jesus appeared to two of them in another form as they were walking into the country, and that the others did not believe their report.
