Printing tips

The story behind the craft

Bible passage: John 6:1–13

A crowd gathers to hear Jesus, and a boy’s five barley loaves and two fish are brought forward. Jesus gives thanks and distributes food; everyone eats, and twelve baskets of pieces remain.

Main takeaway: Jesus responds to the crowd’s hunger with generous provision.

As you arrange the scene

Discuss the characters and setting before placing the cut-out pieces on the background.

Count the loaves and fish, then compare the small beginning with the baskets left over. Talk about gratitude and sharing rather than promising food will multiply in an activity.

Younger learners can name the people and describe their positions. Older learners can explain the moment being represented and distinguish the passage from choices made in the illustration.

Questions to explore

  • What food did the boy have?
  • What did Jesus do before sharing it?
  • What could we share with someone who needs help?

What do children cut and arrange?

The two-page PDF provides the illustrated scene/background and separate cut-out pieces. Colour the pieces, cut them out and try their positions on the background before gluing the final scene. For a Bible reading to accompany this activity, use John 6:1–13.

Which pages should I print, and at what size?

The original PDF pages are A4 landscape. JesusFeedstheFiveThousand.pdf: print the pages you want to use for each learner or group. Print single-sided. On US Letter paper, select Letter and Fit or shrink to the printable area; the originals are not separate Letter-sized files.
