Printing tips

The story behind the craft

Bible passage: Matthew 27:11–26

Pilate hears accusations against Jesus and recognises the pressure surrounding the trial. He washes his hands before the crowd but still hands Jesus over to be crucified.

Main takeaway: A public gesture cannot erase responsibility for an unjust decision.

As you arrange the scene

Discuss the characters and setting before placing the cut-out pieces on the background.

Compare Pilate’s handwashing with the decision he makes afterwards. Keep the focus on his responsibility and avoid blaming an entire people for the actions in the account.

Younger learners can name the people and describe their positions. Older learners can explain the moment being represented and distinguish the passage from choices made in the illustration.

Questions to explore

  • What gesture did Pilate make?
  • What decision followed it?
  • Why does saying it is not my fault not always remove responsibility?
