Single lesson
Abraham Is Tested and God Provides a Ram
Genesis 22:1–19
This lesson traces Genesis 22:1–19 carefully and respectfully. Students will sequence the account, notice what Abraham, Isaac and the angel say and do, and identify how the passage ends with God providing a ram.
Before you teach
In this passage, God tests Abraham and tells him to take Isaac to a mountain in Moriah and offer him there. Abraham goes as God told him. At the crucial moment, Yahweh’s angel stops him, a ram is provided, and the angel speaks blessing because Abraham obeyed God’s voice.
Students will be able to retell the sequence of Genesis 22:1–19 and explain from the passage that God tested Abraham, stopped him, and provided a ram in Isaac’s place.
Welcome: map the story carefully
5 minTell students this is a serious passage and they will stay close to the words of the text. Introduce the aim: follow the order of events, listen for repeated phrases such as “Here I am” and “they both went together”, and notice how the passage itself explains the outcome. Read the reference aloud together.
Genesis 22:1, Genesis 22:6, Genesis 22:8, Genesis 22:19
Read and explain: the test and the journey
10 minRead verses 1–8. Point out that verse 1 says God tested Abraham. List the journey details students hear: Abraham rises early, takes two young men and Isaac, splits wood, travels three days, and tells the young men to stay behind. Notice Isaac’s question about the lamb and Abraham’s answer that God will provide.
Genesis 22:1, Genesis 22:3, Genesis 22:4, Genesis 22:5, Genesis 22:7, Genesis 22:8
Discuss: the turning point on the mountain
10 minRead verses 9–14 slowly. Ask students to identify the most tense moment in the passage and then the exact words that stop the action. Show that the angel says, “Don’t lay your hand on the boy”, and explains, “now I know that you fear God”. Then note the ram caught in the thicket and the place name Abraham gives.
Genesis 22:9, Genesis 22:10, Genesis 22:11, Genesis 22:12, Genesis 22:13, Genesis 22:14
Make and respond: sequence and key words
10 minIn pairs, students make eight small sequence cards from blank paper with short captions from the passage, such as test, journey, Isaac asks, altar, angel calls, ram provided, place named, blessing spoken. After ordering them, they underline one phrase on each card that comes directly from the text and share why that step matters.
Genesis 22:1, Genesis 22:7, Genesis 22:11, Genesis 22:13, Genesis 22:14, Genesis 22:16, Genesis 22:18
Closing: the outcome and what students learned
5 minRead verses 15–19. Summarise the ending: Yahweh’s angel speaks again, says Yahweh will bless Abraham greatly and that nations will be blessed by his offspring because Abraham obeyed God’s voice. Finish by inviting each student to say one sentence beginning, “This passage shows…” using words they can support from the text.

Questions to explore
What details show that Abraham carried out the journey God told him to make?
Look for the travel and preparation actions in order, including what Abraham prepared, who went with him, and how long they travelled.
Genesis 22:3, Genesis 22:4, Genesis 22:5
What does the passage itself say at the moment Abraham is stopped?
Use the angel’s exact words to explain both the command to stop and the reason given in the text.
Genesis 22:11, Genesis 22:12
How does the ending connect obedience, provision and blessing?
Compare the ram provided on the mountain with the second message from the angel about what will happen because Abraham obeyed God’s voice.

Sequence Cards with Text Phrases
What you’ll need
- blank paper or scrap card
- pens or pencils
- Bible text
- scissors
Try it together
- Cut paper into eight small cards.
- Write one event from Genesis 22:1–19 on each card in short form.
- Add a direct phrase from the passage to each card, such as “Here I am” or “God will provide”.
- Work in pairs to place the cards in order and check them against the reading.
- Share one card and explain why that moment is important in the passage.
This helps students follow the sequence of Genesis 22:1–19 and tie each step to words actually found in the passage.
Adapt for your group
- For younger or less confident readers, prepare six teacher-written event cards first and ask students to sort them before adding a matching Bible phrase from the passage.
- For older or more advanced students, ask them to track repeated words or ideas such as “your son, your only son”, “Here I am”, and “provide”, then explain how those repetitions shape the passage.
An optional closing prayer
“God, help us read this passage carefully and truthfully. Teach us from your words what you said and did here, and help us respond with reverence and attention. Amen.”

Genesis 22
1 After these things, God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” He said, “Here I am.”
2 He said, “Now take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go into the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I will tell you of.”
3 Abraham rose early in the morning, and saddled his donkey; and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son. He split the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went to the place of which God had told him.
4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place far off.
5 Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there. We will worship, and come back to you.”
6 Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. He took in his hand the fire and the knife. They both went together.
7 Isaac spoke to Abraham his father, and said, “My father?” He said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Here is the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”
8 Abraham said, “God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they both went together.
9 They came to the place which God had told him of. Abraham built the altar there, and laid the wood in order, bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, on the wood.
10 Abraham stretched out his hand, and took the knife to kill his son.
11 Yahweh’s angel called to him out of the sky, and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” He said, “Here I am.”
12 He said, “Don’t lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”
13 Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and saw that behind him was a ram caught in the thicket by his horns. Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering instead of his son.
14 Abraham called the name of that place “Yahweh Will Provide”. As it is said to this day, “On Yahweh’s mountain, it will be provided.”
15 Yahweh’s angel called to Abraham a second time out of the sky,
16 and said, “ ‘I have sworn by myself,’ says Yahweh, ‘because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son,
17 that I will bless you greatly, and I will multiply your offspring greatly like the stars of the heavens, and like the sand which is on the seashore. Your offspring will possess the gate of his enemies.
18 All the nations of the earth will be blessed by your offspring, because you have obeyed my voice.’ ”
19 So Abraham returned to his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba. Abraham lived at Beersheba.
