Single lesson
Jesus Turns Water into Wine
John 2:1–11
At a wedding in Cana, Jesus responds when the wine runs out. This lesson helps children follow the order of the account, notice what people say and do, and see why this sign matters.
Before you teach
John 2:1–11 takes place at a wedding in Cana of Galilee. Jesus’ mother is there, Jesus and his disciples are invited, and a problem arises when the wine runs out. The passage ends by explaining that this was the beginning of Jesus’ signs and that his disciples believed in him.
Students will be able to retell the steps in John 2:1–11, identify key choices made by Jesus’ mother and the servants, and explain from John 2:11 that this sign revealed Jesus’ glory and led the disciples to believe in him.
Welcome: Who was at the wedding?
5 minBegin by naming the setting and people in the passage. Read John 2:1–2 aloud. Ask children to listen for where this happened and who was there. List their answers: a wedding in Cana of Galilee, Jesus’ mother, Jesus, and his disciples. Explain that this account starts with an ordinary celebration before a problem appears.
John 2:1, John 2:2
Read and explain: The problem and Jesus’ words
7 minRead John 2:3–5. Point out the problem clearly: the wine ran out. Jesus’ mother tells him, ‘They have no wine.’ Jesus answers, ‘My hour has not yet come,’ and then his mother tells the servants, ‘Whatever he says to you, do it.’ This passage does not explain that phrase further, so stay with what John says here. As an application, children can see that her words encourage careful attention to Jesus’ instructions.
John 2:3, John 2:4, John 2:5
Discuss: What did Jesus tell them to do?
6 minRead John 2:6–8. Show that there were six stone water pots used in the Jews’ way of purifying. Explain ‘fill them up to the brim’ as completely full. Then trace the servants’ actions in order: fill the pots, draw some out, and take it to the ruler of the feast. Notice that they do what Jesus says.
John 2:6, John 2:7, John 2:8
Make and respond: Sequence the sign
7 minChildren make simple sequence cards for the account: wedding in Cana, ‘They have no wine’, ‘Do whatever he says to you’, fill the water pots, take some to the ruler, ruler tastes, disciples believe. As they order the cards, ask them to match each step to the verses. Remind them that the ruler tasted water that had become wine.
John 2:1, John 2:3, John 2:5, John 2:7, John 2:8, John 2:9, John 2:11
Closing: What does this sign show?
5 minRead John 2:9–11. Point out that the ruler comments on the good wine, but the passage itself explains the main meaning in verse 11: this was the beginning of Jesus’ signs, it revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him. Finish by asking children to answer from verse 11 with one of those exact ideas.
John 2:9, John 2:10, John 2:11

Water to Wine Sequence Cards
What you’ll need
- plain paper or card
- pencils or textas
- scissors
- Bible
Try it together
- Draw or write seven simple scene cards: wedding in Cana, ‘They have no wine’, ‘Do whatever he says to you’, six water pots, fill the pots with water, ruler tastes, disciples believe.
- Mix the cards up and ask children to place them in the order of John 2:1–11.
- Read the verses again and let children check each card against the passage.
- Invite each child to explain one card using words from the verses.
This activity helps children follow the sequence of the sign and notice how the passage moves from a problem at the wedding to Jesus revealing his glory.
Adapt for your group
- For younger children, prepare the cards in advance with simple pictures and ask them to place only four main events in order.
- For older or more confident children, have them add verse references to each card and explain how John 2:11 tells the meaning of the sign.
An optional closing prayer
‘Lord Jesus, thank you for showing your glory in this sign. Please help us listen to your words and trust you.’

John 2
1 The third day, there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there.
2 Jesus also was invited, with his disciples, to the wedding.
3 When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no wine.”
4 Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with you and me? My hour has not yet come.”
5 His mother said to the servants, “Whatever he says to you, do it.”
6 Now there were six water pots of stone set there after the Jews’ way of purifying, containing two or three metretes apiece.
7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the water pots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim.
8 He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the ruler of the feast.” So they took it.
9 When the ruler of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and didn’t know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the ruler of the feast called the bridegroom
10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when the guests have drunk freely, then that which is worse. You have kept the good wine until now!”
11 This beginning of his signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
