John the Baptist and the Baptism of Jesus
Matthew 3:1–17; Mark 1:1–11; Luke 3:1–22; John 1:19–34
Children will explore how John prepared people, how he answered questions about himself, why Jesus came to be baptised, and what God said about Jesus. They will sort the main parts of the account and speak about them from the verses.
Before you teach
In these passages, John baptises in the wilderness and around the Jordan, calls people to repent, and tells them to show change in their lives. Priests and Levites ask who he is and why he baptises. Jesus comes to John, John objects, Jesus replies, and at Jesus’ baptism the Spirit descends and a voice speaks from heaven. On the next day in John’s Gospel, John testifies about Jesus.
Students will be able to sequence the main events of Jesus’ baptism, describe John’s role and message, and explain that God identifies Jesus as his beloved Son.
Welcome: Listen for John’s message and Jesus’ baptism
4 minTell the children they will listen for two linked parts of the account. First, John calls people to repent and baptises them in the Jordan. Then Jesus comes to John, is baptised, and God speaks from heaven. Ask them to listen for what John says, what Jesus does, and what God says.
Matthew 3:2, Matthew 3:6, Matthew 3:13, Matthew 3:17, Mark 1:4, Luke 3:3
Read and explain: John calls for repentance and answers questions
8 minRead from Matthew, Luke, and John. Explain that John wanted more than words. He told people to produce fruit worthy of repentance, and Luke gives examples such as sharing, fairness, and refusing false accusation or violence. In John, priests and Levites ask who he is and why he baptises. John says he is not the Christ and calls himself a voice making the Lord’s way straight.
Matthew 3:8, Luke 3:10, Luke 3:11, Luke 3:13, Luke 3:14, John 1:19, John 1:20, John 1:23, John 1:25, John 1:26
Discuss: John points to one greater than himself
5 minHelp the group notice that John keeps pointing away from himself. He says someone mightier is coming and that he is not worthy even to loosen that person’s sandal strap. John baptises in water, but he says the coming one will baptise in the Holy Spirit. This shows John’s role was to prepare and to testify, not to take the central place.
Mark 1:7, Mark 1:8, Matthew 3:11, John 1:27, John 1:33
Make and respond: Two card sets, not one merged timeline
9 minMake one set of sequence cards for the baptism scene only: Jesus comes to John, John objects, Jesus answers, Jesus is baptised, the Spirit descends, and the voice speaks. If time allows, make a second smaller set for John’s testimony: priests and Levites question John, John says he is not the Christ, and on the next day John points to Jesus. Keep each card linked to one verse.
Matthew 3:13, Matthew 3:14, Matthew 3:15, Matthew 3:16, Matthew 3:17, John 1:19, John 1:20, John 1:25, John 1:29
Closing: What the passage says about Jesus
4 minRead the words from heaven and John’s later testimony. Explain simply that when John says, ‘the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world’, he is identifying Jesus as the one who deals with sin. End by asking each child to name one true statement from the passage about John or about Jesus.
Matthew 3:17, Mark 1:11, Luke 3:22, John 1:29, John 1:34
Questions to explore
When people asked John what they should do, what answers did he give that showed ‘fruit worthy of repentance’?
Look at the people’s questions and John’s practical answers about sharing, collecting fairly, and refusing violence or false accusation.
Luke 3:10, Luke 3:11, Luke 3:12, Luke 3:13, Luke 3:14, Matthew 3:8
Why did John hesitate when Jesus came to be baptised, and how did Jesus answer him?
Read John’s objection carefully, then read Jesus’ reply about what was fitting for them to do.
Matthew 3:14, Matthew 3:15
What does John say about himself in John 1, and what does he say about Jesus on the next day?
Compare John saying he is not the Christ and is a voice in the wilderness with his later words calling Jesus the Lamb of God and the Son of God.
John 1:20, John 1:23, John 1:29, John 1:34

Baptism Scene and Testimony Cards
What you’ll need
- plain paper or card
- pencils or textas
- scissors
- Bible
- small envelope or two piles for sorting
Try it together
- Help the children make six cards for the baptism scene from Matthew 3:13-17, with one verse-based moment on each card.
- If time allows, make three more cards from John 1:19-29 for John’s testimony, keeping them as a second set.
- Mix the baptism cards and ask children to place them in order using the verses.
- Then compare the second set and explain that John 1:29 says ‘The next day’, so it is John’s testimony about Jesus, not the same moment as the baptism scene.
This activity helps children follow the order of the baptism account and also notice John’s separate testimony about who Jesus is.
Adapt for your group
- For younger children, use only four baptism cards: Jesus comes, John objects and Jesus answers together, the Spirit descends, and the voice speaks.
- For older or confident readers, ask them to write the exact verse reference on each card and explain why John 1:29 belongs in a second set.
An optional closing prayer
Dear God, thank you for showing us who Jesus is. Please help us listen to your word, turn from sin, and speak truthfully about Jesus.

Matthew 3
1 In those days, John the Baptizer came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying,
2 “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!”
3 For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, make the way of the Lord ready! Make his paths straight!”
4 Now John himself wore clothing made of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.
5 Then people from Jerusalem, all of Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him.
6 They were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for his baptism, he said to them, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Therefore produce fruit worthy of repentance!
9 Don’t think to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father,’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.
10 Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire.
11 “I indeed baptize you in water for repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit.
12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. He will gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.”
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.
14 But John would have hindered him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?”
15 But Jesus, answering, said to him, “Allow it now, for this is the fitting way for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed him.
16 Jesus, when he was baptized, went up directly from the water: and behold, the heavens were opened to him. He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming on him.
17 Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
Mark 1
1 The beginning of the Good News of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
2 As it is written in the prophets, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you:
3 the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make ready the way of the Lord! Make his paths straight!’ ”
4 John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching the baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins.
5 All the country of Judea and all those of Jerusalem went out to him. They were baptized by him in the Jordan river, confessing their sins.
6 John was clothed with camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist. He ate locusts and wild honey.
7 He preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and loosen.
8 I baptized you in water, but he will baptize you in the Holy Spirit.”
9 In those days, Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
10 Immediately coming up from the water, he saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
11 A voice came out of the sky, “You are my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Luke 3
1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,
2 during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness.
3 He came into all the region around the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for remission of sins.
4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make ready the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight.
5 Every valley will be filled. Every mountain and hill will be brought low. The crooked will become straight, and the rough ways smooth.
6 All flesh will see God’s salvation.’ ”
7 He said therefore to the multitudes who went out to be baptized by him, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Therefore produce fruits worthy of repentance, and don’t begin to say among yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father;’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones!
9 Even now the ax also lies at the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
10 The multitudes asked him, “What then must we do?”
11 He answered them, “He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none. He who has food, let him do likewise.”
12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what must we do?”
13 He said to them, “Collect no more than that which is appointed to you.”
14 Soldiers also asked him, saying, “What about us? What must we do?” He said to them, “Extort from no one by violence, neither accuse anyone wrongfully. Be content with your wages.”
15 As the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he was the Christ,
16 John answered them all, “I indeed baptize you with water, but he comes who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire.
17 His winnowing fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor, and will gather the wheat into his barn; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
18 Then with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people,
19 but Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for all the evil things which Herod had done,
20 added this also to them all, that he shut up John in prison.
21 Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus also had been baptized and was praying. The sky was opened,
22 and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form like a dove on him; and a voice came out of the sky, saying “You are my beloved Son. In you I am well pleased.”
John 1
19 This is John’s testimony, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
20 He declared, and didn’t deny, but he declared, “I am not the Christ.”
21 They asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.”
22 They said therefore to him, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23 He said, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”
24 The ones who had been sent were from the Pharisees.
25 They asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?”
26 John answered them, “I baptize in water, but among you stands one whom you don’t know.
27 He is the one who comes after me, who is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to loosen.”
28 These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 The next day, he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who is preferred before me, for he was before me.’
31 I didn’t know him, but for this reason I came baptizing in water, that he would be revealed to Israel.”
32 John testified, saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven, and it remained on him.
33 I didn’t recognize him, but he who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘On whomever you will see the Spirit descending and remaining on him is he who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’
34 I have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.”
