Jesus Sends His Followers to Make Disciples

The risen Jesus sent his followers out with his message for all nations.

Matthew 28:16–20; Mark 16:14–18About 2 minutes
Let’s begin

Matthew says the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had directed them to go. When they saw him, they bowed before him, though some doubted. Mark also records that Jesus appeared to the eleven as they were at the table and rebuked their unbelief, because they had not believed those who had seen him after he rose.

What happened next

In Matthew's account, Jesus began by speaking about his authority. He said that all authority in heaven and on earth had been given to him. The commission that followed came from the risen Jesus, who spoke with authority over heaven and earth.

What happened next

Then Jesus gave his followers their task. Matthew says they were to make disciples of all nations. Mark says they were to go into all the world and preach the Good News to the whole creation. The message of Jesus was not to remain in one place.

What happened next

Matthew says they were to baptise in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. They were also to teach people to observe everything Jesus had commanded them. Mark adds that whoever believes and is baptised will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

The end

Matthew ends with Jesus' promise that he would be with his followers always, to the end of the age. Mark's longer ending adds that signs would accompany believers, including casting out demons, speaking with new languages, safety from serpents and deadly drink, and healing for the sick.
